Is it true that if you test negative for HIV, then you're surely clear of it?

I've read on HIV websites and also read answers of HIV educators of previously asked questions here that if you test negative on an HIV test six months after the last possible exposure, then you are surely clean of it. Well I tested negative yesterday and the possible exposure was one and a half to two years ago. This means I'm HIV-free?Is it true that if you test negative for HIV, then you're surely clear of it?
If you have not put yourself at risk in 1 1/2 years, then you are HIV-.

Here's the basics about HIV infection.

The HIV test looks for HIV antibodies a persons body produces if they are infected.

It takes generally 2-12 weeks, up to 6 months and for a very very small population (usually very ill from some other chronic infection or disease) 1 year to produce HIV antibodies.

If the test is HIV- after this time factor, the person is HIV-.

Stay safe.

FYI it will not show for year to come as one of your responders stated. You do not need to keep testing for HIV unless you put yourself at risk again and then you will have to wait another 6 months to confirm the test results. What this person may be getting confused with is if a person is HIV+, the symptoms or progression of the disease may not show up for years.

I have worked in the field of HIV for 17 years. Is it true that if you test negative for HIV, then you're surely clear of it?
oh my gosh really? NO you're not free of it. my doctors always told me that it might not show up for years to come. it's healthy to get tested once a year at least or something. i'm still getting tested for it on and off and i stopped having sex a year ago. i'm sorry about the people that have gave you the wrong information. please, for your health...at least get tested once a year or before you have sex with a new gf. okay? you're on my contact/fan list so i do have concern for you.
You are negative it is said that if you have actually had contact with someone you suspect is HIV Positive it may take up to 6 months to a year for it to show up in your system but seeing as it has been a 1 1/2 year to 2 years, then yes you are negative.
You are probably clear. But that doesn't mean much if you are engaging in high-risk behaviors. Be wise and be safe.
yes your negative
